The new BMW F450 GS

BMW has just dropped a new entry-level adventure machine: the F 450 GS, designed to bring GS DNA into a smaller, more accessible package. With A2 licence-friendly power, a lightweight chassis and modern GS technology, it is built for riders who want agility, versatility and adventure without moving into heavyweight GS territory.

What we know so far

The BMW F 450 GS is built around an all-new 420 cc parallel-twin engine that delivers 48 hp for A2-licence compliance, along with a 135-degree crank offset designed to give smoother, more characterful power delivery. It meets Euro 5+ emissions standards and uses a low-mounted exhaust for improved balance. The new steel trellis frame keeps weight down, while KYB suspension, multiple seat height options and Brembo braking with ABS Pro ensure the bike is well equipped for both road and light off-road use.

Electronics are a major focus, with Rain, Road and Enduro modes as standard and Enduro Pro available on higher trims. A six-and-a-half-inch TFT display with connectivity, Dynamic Traction Control, Dynamic Brake Control and engine drag control all come included. BMW also offers Shift Assistant Pro for clutchless gear changes and the optional Easy Ride Clutch for added low-speed comfort. Multiple trims, accessory options and ergonomic upgrades allow the F 450 GS to be tailored toward commuting, touring or adventure riding, following BMW’s modular GS philosophy.

A brief history of the BMW F 450 GS

The GS family is iconic for being rugged, versatile and built for everything from city commuting to long-distance touring. BMW’s GS series has included large-capacity tourers and more compact off-road machines.

The F450 GS continues that legacy in the sub-500cc category and makes genuine GS character available to a wider audience. It also aligns with the growing industry trend toward smaller displacement motorcycles that offer strong performance with less complexity.

The newly announced BMW F459 GS represents a significant step forward from the outgoing middleweight GS platform, bringing improvements in power delivery, handling, and rider-focused technology. While it maintains the core adventure DNA that has defined BMW’s F-series, the F459 GS introduces a host of updates designed to make it more competitive in the fast-growing mid-capacity adventure class.

What’s new compared to older models and competitor models

Engine & Performance

The F450 GS debuts a redesigned parallel-twin engine with increased displacement and revised internals, offering stronger mid-range torque and smoother power delivery than the previous generation. Improved fuel mapping and a lighter, more efficient exhaust system contribute to quicker throttle response and reduced overall weight. Compared to older models, riders will notice enhanced acceleration, better overtaking power, and more balanced performance both on and off the road.

In the competitive landscape, the F459 GS now sits more confidently against bikes like the Yamaha Ténéré 700, Triumph Tiger 900, and KTM 790 Adventure, particularly in terms of refinement and real-world rideability.

Electronics & Rider Aids

BMW has expanded the electronic suite with its latest-generation IMU, allowing more advanced traction control, cornering ABS, and refined power modes. A larger, higher-resolution TFT display replaces the previous unit, with improved navigation integration, Bluetooth connectivity, and more customisable riding profiles.

New features such as adaptive engine braking, refined hill-start control, and optional radar-assisted safety systems (depending on final market specs) put the F450 GS ahead of several direct competitors in terms of rider assistance technology.

Chassis & Equipment

The F450 GS benefits from a revised frame with optimised rigidity and reduced weight, delivering sharper handling without sacrificing the stability GS models are known for. Updated suspension, either standard or optional electronically adjustable units, provides more control on rough surfaces, while new braking hardware improves stopping power and modulation.

Ergonomically, the bike features a redesigned seat, improved wind protection, and a narrower midsection for better comfort during long-distance rides. Compared to older models, the new chassis setup offers more confidence off-road and a more planted feel on tarmac.

In its segment, these updates position the F450 GS as one of the most balanced middleweight adventure motorcycles, more advanced than the Ténéré 700 in tech, more refined than the KTM 790 Adventure, and more off-road focused than the Triumph Tiger 850 Sport.

Design & Features

The new styling introduces sharper lines and a more aggressive GS stance, accompanied by full LED lighting, updated bodywork, improved aerodynamics, and practical touches such as upgraded luggage mounting points and integrated charging ports. 

While clearly evolving from the previous generation, these design improvements reflect BMW’s push to modernise the F-series and ensure the F450 GS stands out in a highly competitive class.

Launch, pricing and availability

BMW officially revealed the F450 GS at EICMA 2025. In the UK, the motorbike is already available for pre-order, with deliveries expected to begin in April 2026.

The base model in Cosmic Black is priced at approximately £6,990 OTR, while the Exclusive, Sport and Trophy trim levels will be priced higher to reflect the additional features and equipment they include.
