What is SORN and Laid-Up Car Insurance?
If your car is off the road, you’ve likely filed a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) with the DVLA to stop paying road tax and insurance. However, once you cancel your standard road policy, your vehicle is completely unprotected.
Laid-Up Car Insurance is a specialist Fire, Theft, and Malicious Damage (FTMD) policy designed specifically for vehicles that aren’t being driven. It strips away the expensive “road risk” cover you don’t need like third-party liability or accidental road damage and focuses entirely on protecting your asset while it’s in storage, under restoration, or waiting for the next track season.
The main things you need to qualify for this product are:
- A Secure Locked Building – Classic, track, and race cars must be stored in a locked building. SORN road cars or vans may be kept on a driveway or garden, subject to security requirements based on their value.
- Specialist Security – Depending on the vehicle’s value, you may need approved alarms, immobilisers, or trackers. For high-value builds (£40k+), higher security tiers apply.
- Identifying Marks – If your vehicle is unregistered (no V5 log book) and valued over £4,000, it must be fitted with a DataTag within 28 days of the policy starting.
- Modification Coverage – We understand enthusiasts. Modifications are covered as long as they are included in the declared market value and you have evidence (photos/receipts) of the work.
