What is classic motorbike insurance?

Classic motorbike insurance is like a preservation order for your pride and joy, with added peace of mind. Whether it’s a lovingly restored Norton, a barn-find BSA or a ‘70s Jap legend, classic bikes deserve more than a standard policy.

It’s not just about theft, damage or liability. It’s about protecting the stories, scars and soul of a machine that’s survived the decades and still turns heads. When things go sideways, you want cover that understands your bike’s true value, not just its book price.

That’s why we offer agreed value options, so you know exactly what you’re covered for if the worst happens. No haggling, no undervaluing, just fair protection for your investment.

And because it still needs to be legal on the road, classic motorbike insurance helps keep you compliant while treating your bike with the respect it deserves. Think of it as proper protection for your rolling history.

What types of classic motorbike insurance do we offer?

Choosing the right level of motorbike insurance isn’t just about ticking a box, it depends on what you ride, how you ride, and what you want covered if things go wrong.

There are three main types of cover: Third Party Only (TPO), Third Party, Fire & Theft (TPFT), and Comprehensive. Each offers a different level of protection, from the bare legal minimum to full-fat, top-shelf peace of mind.

Here’s what each one actually means, no jargon, no faff.

Third Party Only (TPO)

Third Party Only (TPO) cover is the minimum insurance required by law to ride or park your bike on the public highways. It provides liability insurance for injury to other people or damage to their property caused by your motorbike.

Third Party, Fire & Theft (TPFT) provides the same liability cover required by law as TPO, but also benefits from fire and theft cover too. It’s the middle ground between TPO and Comp, however it does not provide cover for accidental damage to your motorbike that is your fault. If you’re hit by a third party you can claim from their insurance.

Comprehensive motorbike insurance covers all the stuff provided by TPO and TPFT cover, as well as accidental damage to your motorbike. If you’re hit by a third party you can claim from their insurance directly, or you can claim from your policy and wait for the insurer to recover their losses.

How can you get cheaper classic motorbike insurance?

Want to keep your premium low without compromising on cover? These are some of the key factors that influence what you pay:

  • Bike type and engine size: The faster or more desirable the bike, the more it usually costs to insure.
  • Your age and experience: Newer or younger riders tend to pay more, while experienced riders with clean records are rewarded with lower premiums.
  • Where you live and store your bike: Bikes kept in secure garages in low-risk areas usually cost less to insure than those parked on the street in busy urban zones.
  • Annual mileage and usage: The more you ride, especially for commuting, the higher the risk—occasional or leisure riders may pay less.
  • Security features: Alarms, immobilisers, trackers and secure locks can all help bring the price down.

Frequently asked questions about classic motorbike insurance.

What is considered a classic motorbike for insurance purposes?

For classic motorbike insurance, most insurers define a classic as a bike that’s at least 20 years old with historical, collectible, or sentimental value. Whether it’s a vintage Norton, a retro Honda, or a custom rebuild with character, it could qualify for specialist classic motorbike cover.

Yes. Unless your bike is officially declared SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification), it legally needs to be insured. Even when it’s parked up in the garage, classic motorbike insurance can protect it against theft, fire, accidental damage, and more.

Absolutely. One of the key benefits of classic motorbike insurance is the option for agreed value cover. This means you and the insurer agree on what your bike is worth up front, so there’s no haggling or guesswork if it’s written off or stolen.

In many cases, yes. Classic motorbike insurance is often cheaper because classic bikes tend to be ridden less frequently, kept in good nick, and owned by experienced riders. With limited mileage policies and the right storage conditions, premiums can be surprisingly low.

You can, but classic motorbike insurance is usually designed for occasional use, like weekend rides, rallies or shows. If you plan to use your classic every day, a standard motorbike policy might be more suitable. Otherwise, enjoy the perks of specialist cover for your pride and joy.
