What types of scooter and moped insurance do we offer?
Choosing the right level of motorbike insurance isn’t just about ticking a box, it depends on what you ride, how you ride, and what you want covered if things go wrong.
There are three main types of cover: Third Party Only (TPO), Third Party, Fire & Theft (TPFT), and Comprehensive. Each offers a different level of protection, from the bare legal minimum to full-fat, top-shelf peace of mind.
Here’s what each one actually means, no jargon, no faff.
Third Party Only (TPO)
Third Party Only (TPO) cover is the minimum insurance required by law to ride or park your bike on the public highways. It provides liability insurance for injury to other people or damage to their property caused by your motorbike.
Third Party, Fire & Theft (TPFT)
Third Party, Fire & Theft (TPFT) provides the same liability cover required by law as TPO, but also benefits from fire and theft cover too. It’s the middle ground between TPO and Comp, however it does not provide cover for accidental damage to your motorbike that is your fault. If you’re hit by a third party you can claim from their insurance.
Comprehensive Motorbike Insurance
Comprehensive motorbike insurance covers all the stuff provided by TPO and TPFT cover, as well as accidental damage to your motorbike. If you’re hit by a third party you can claim from their insurance directly, or you can claim from your policy and wait for the insurer to recover their losses.
How can you get cheaper scooter and moped insurance?
Want to keep your premium low without compromising on cover? These are some of the key factors that influence what you pay:
- Bike type and engine size: The faster or more desirable the bike, the more it usually costs to insure.
- Your age and experience: Newer or younger riders tend to pay more, while experienced riders with clean records are rewarded with lower premiums.
- Where you live and store your bike: Bikes kept in secure garages in low-risk areas usually cost less to insure than those parked on the street in busy urban zones.
- Annual mileage and usage: The more you ride, especially for commuting, the higher the risk—occasional or leisure riders may pay less.
- Security features: Alarms, immobilisers, trackers and secure locks can all help bring the price down.

Frequently asked questions about scooter and moped insurance.
What is scooter and moped insurance?
Scooter and moped insurance covers you financially if your bike is stolen, damaged or involved in an accident. It also keeps you legal to ride on UK roads, with cover levels ranging from Third Party Only to Fully Comprehensive.
Do I need insurance for a 50cc moped?
Yes. Even if you’re riding a 50cc moped on a CBT licence, insurance is still a legal requirement in the UK. You must have at least Third Party Only (TPO) cover to be on the road.
What affects the cost of moped or scooter insurance?
Several things impact the price, including your age, riding experience, location, bike make and model, security measures and annual mileage. Modifications or lack of secure parking can also affect your premium.
Does moped insurance cover me for commuting?
It depends on the policy. If you use your moped or scooter for riding to work, make sure your insurance includes commuting. Some basic policies only cover social, domestic and pleasure use, so check before you buy.
Can I insure a scooter or moped that has been modified?
Yes, but you’ll need to declare any modifications when getting a quote. Changes like aftermarket exhausts, custom paintwork or performance upgrades can affect your premium. Honest disclosure ensures your scooter or moped is properly covered if something goes wrong.
